  • Follow-up check after the course

Ayurveda

  • Medicated oils or decoctions given into the uterus or urinary tract
  • Traditionally used in PCOD, endometriosis, infertility and menstrual disorders
  • May help prepare the uterus for conception
  • Usually combined with Panchakarma, yoga and diet guidance
  • Planned around your menstrual cycle, as Ayurveda advises

Uttar Basti is one of the more specialised therapies in Ayurvedic gynaecology. Many women hear about it from relatives or online and come to us wanting to know what it is and whether it can help. At Venus Women’s Wellness Clinic in Wakad, Dr. Madhavi Tayade offers Uttar Basti only when it is suitable for you, and only after a proper examination.

What Uttar Basti is

In Uttar Basti, a small, measured amount of medicated oil or herbal decoction is gently given into the uterus or urinary tract through a fine, sterile instrument. Classical Ayurveda traditionally uses it for concerns such as PCOD, endometriosis, infertility and menstrual disorders, and to help prepare the uterus for conception. At our clinic it is usually one part of a wider plan, combined with Panchakarma, yoga and diet guidance.

Safety comes first

Uttar Basti involves the inside of the uterus, so we are careful about who receives it and how.

It is done only after a gynaecological examination and, where needed, sonography and other tests. A pregnancy test is part of the process, because it is never done in pregnancy. It is also not done during your period or when there is any active infection of the vagina, cervix, uterus or urinary tract. Sessions take place in a clean, sterile setting with careful technique. The doctor decides whether it is right for you after assessment, and sometimes another approach turns out to suit you better.

How it fits with modern care

Dr. Madhavi Tayade is a Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, so Uttar Basti never stands in for a proper diagnosis. For a fertility concern, you will also have the usual evaluation of hormones, ovulation and tubes, along with your partner’s semen analysis. For heavy or painful periods, a scan and tests look for the cause. Only then is Uttar Basti considered, as a supportive therapy that may help, under medical supervision, alongside any modern treatment you need.

What a course looks like

If it suits you, sessions are usually planned over a few days soon after your period ends. Each one is short, and you rest for a while before going home. You will get clear instructions on what to avoid afterwards and when to come back. If you notice fever, severe pain or unusual discharge after a session, contact us; for severe symptoms, go to the nearest hospital or call 108.

Questions women ask

What is Uttar Basti?

Uttar Basti is an Ayurvedic therapy in which a small amount of medicated oil or decoction is gently given into the uterus or urinary tract. It is traditionally used for certain menstrual, uterine and fertility concerns. It is one part of a broader treatment plan.

Is Uttar Basti painful?

Most women describe mild discomfort or cramping, similar to a Pap smear or a mild period cramp, which settles with rest. Dr. Madhavi Tayade explains each step before starting and you can ask to pause at any time.

Who should not have Uttar Basti?

It is not done during pregnancy, during your period, or when there is an active vaginal, cervical, uterine or urinary infection. It may also not be suitable for some other conditions, which is why an examination always comes first.

How many sessions are needed?

This depends on your condition and how your body responds. A course is usually spread over a few days after your period, and may be repeated over a few cycles. Dr. Madhavi Tayade will decide this with you after examination.

Can Uttar Basti replace IVF or other fertility treatment?

No. Uttar Basti is a supportive therapy. It may be used alongside modern fertility evaluation and treatment, but it does not replace them.
