PCOD, or polycystic ovarian disease, is one of the most common reasons young women in Wakad and across Pune see a gynaecologist. It can show up as irregular or missed periods, acne, weight that is hard to lose, hair growth on the face or body, thinning hair on the scalp, or difficulty getting pregnant. It is common, and it is manageable.

Understanding PCOD

In PCOD, the hormones that control ovulation fall out of rhythm. The ovaries may not release an egg every month, so periods become irregular. Higher levels of male-type hormones can cause acne and hair growth. Many women also have insulin resistance, which makes it easier to gain weight and raises the long-term risk of diabetes. Since PCOD touches so many parts of your health, your plan has to look at you as a whole, not only at the ovaries on a scan.

How we treat PCOD the Modern and Ayurveda Way

Treatment begins with a careful history and the right tests: a sonography, and blood tests for hormones, thyroid, sugar and insulin. If you need medicines to regulate your cycles, manage skin or support ovulation, Dr. Madhavi Tayade prescribes them and explains why.

Ayurveda works alongside. Nadi Parikshan gives her a picture of your constitution, and from it she builds a personalised diet plan, a daily routine and yoga practices that may help with weight, insulin resistance and hormonal balance. Herbal formulations traditionally used for cycle regularity, and Panchakarma-based detox therapies where suitable, are added under medical supervision. We review your progress at every visit.

When to see a doctor

Book an appointment if your periods come more than 35 days apart or skip for months, if you are gaining weight without a clear reason, if acne or facial hair is increasing, or if you have been trying to conceive for a year (six months if you are over 35). Even if you were diagnosed with PCOD years ago, a fresh review can help, especially before planning a pregnancy.

Living well with PCOD

PCOD care works well as a steady partnership. Small, consistent changes to food, sleep and movement, with treatment that is reviewed over time, help most women feel more in control of their cycles and their health.

Questions women ask

Is PCOD the same as PCOS?

The two terms are often used interchangeably. Both describe a hormonal pattern that can cause irregular periods, acne, weight gain and cysts on the ovaries. PCOS is the term usually used when there are wider metabolic signs, such as insulin resistance.

Can PCOD be treated permanently?

PCOD is a long-term condition that is managed rather than switched off. Many women see their cycles, weight and symptoms improve with steady lifestyle changes and the right treatment. The aim is to keep you well over the years, not just to bring one period.

Can I get pregnant if I have PCOD?

Many women with PCOD conceive, sometimes naturally and sometimes with help for ovulation. Dr. Madhavi Tayade will assess your cycles and hormones and plan ovulation support if you are trying to conceive.

Do I have to stop my current medicines to start Ayurvedic treatment?

No. Please do not stop any prescribed medicine on your own. At our clinic, Ayurvedic support is added alongside modern treatment under medical supervision, and any change in medicines is decided by the doctor.

Does weight loss help with PCOD?

For many women, even a modest loss of weight may help periods become more regular and improve insulin resistance. Instead of a crash diet, we give you a food and activity plan that fits your routine.
