Abhyanga and Swedana are the gentlest and most familiar of the Ayurvedic therapies: a warm oil massage followed by soothing herbal steam. At Venus Women’s Wellness Clinic in Wakad, they are given by a trained therapist in our private Panchakarma suite, after Dr. Madhavi Tayade has checked that they suit you.
What Abhyanga and Swedana are
Abhyanga is a full-body massage with warm medicated oil, using long, rhythmic strokes. The oil is chosen for your body type and concern. Swedana follows: gentle steam, usually infused with herbal decoctions, while your head stays outside and cool. Classical Ayurveda traditionally uses this pair to calm Vata, ease stiffness and nourish the body. They are also the preparation step (snehana and swedana) before main Panchakarma therapies such as Virechana and Basti. They can also be taken on their own as a short course.
Who it may help
Abhyanga and Swedana are traditionally used, and may help as supportive therapies, for:
- stress, tiredness and poor sleep
- body aches, stiffness and low back discomfort
- menstrual discomfort and cramps, between periods, as part of a wider plan
- hormonal balance support in PCOD and PCOS, together with diet, activity and modern care
- preparing the body before trying to conceive, including before IVF (see infertility care)
- recovery after childbirth, once your doctor agrees (see postnatal care)
For some women with sluggish metabolism, we may suggest Udvartana, a dry herbal powder massage, instead of oil. It is supportive, and it is not a weight-loss treatment.
How we do it safely at our clinic
Dr. Madhavi first reviews your history, BP and any medicines, and checks your skin. The oil is warmed to a comfortable temperature, prepared fresh for each person, and linen is changed for every session. Steam is kept at a moderate level, water is offered, and the therapist stays with you and stops at once if you feel hot, dizzy or uncomfortable. You rest afterwards before going home, and we suggest a warm bath later and a light meal.
Who should not have it, or should wait
Abhyanga and Swedana are avoided during fever, an active infection, skin infections or open wounds, and straight after a heavy meal. Steam is usually avoided during pregnancy and during your period, and it may not suit you if you have high BP, heart concerns, varicose veins or tend to faint. After childbirth, especially a caesarean, massage and steam wait until your doctor confirms you are healing well. Dr. Madhavi will advise. If you feel unwell, tell us; in an emergency, go to the nearest hospital or call 108.
